Wrapped in a borrowed blanket and standing in the rain, Margaret Carter thanked God for the woman who warned her family as their house burned up around them. She thanked God for Mike Caler, too, who called 911 when he saw the flames whipping out of the garage windows and from beneath the eaves of the roof. Carter said she was in the kitchen and the rest of the family was watching TV when the desperate, frantic knocking sounded at the door at about 6:15 p.m. A woman was there she didn't know, shouting for the family to get out. This woman helped Margaret carry out her 9-month-old and 8-year-old grandsons as Mike Caler came to help the family escape the flames consuming their home, at 295 Deagen Road in Penn Township. "I called 911 as soon as I saw the fire and pretty much by the time I hung up the phone, the flames had taken the house," said Caler, who was visiting a neighbor at the time. All of the family escaped unharmed. Margaret's husband Jerry carried out their Jack Russell terrier named Tinker and their chihuahua named Bella. After the fire was put out, Margaret sat in the yard, wrapped in a blanket and still trying to figure out what caused the sudden and frightening blaze. She said they had started the wood stove about an hour before the fire began, but she just didn't know if that was the cause. Officials at the scene wouldn't comment on the origin of the blaze. Caler said the fire consumed the garage area on the side of the home causing "extensive" damage. The family rents the home from a Camp Hill man, and responders were working to reach the property owner Tuesday evening. As many as five people are displaced by the fire and Margaret Carter said they will stay with family in the area for the immediate future. "I just can't believe this," she said, "and here comes the rain. Oh God, what else?" The rest of the family had already taken shelter and firefighters came to direct Margaret and Jerry to the warmth of an idling car. The rains picked up but Jerry paused, looking to return the blanket to the woman who had warned his family.
