Hanover fire crews rescued a woman and her child from the second floor of their home on Carlisle Street, where a fire broke out this morning. Carlisle Street was closed near the 400 block from about 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. as crews worked to fight the fire and treated Beronica Sosa and her 2-year-old daughter Joselyn Robledo at the scene. The fire started in the living room of the front apartment unit of the home, which is rented by Sosa and her husband Migual Angel Roberto, said Hanover Fire Commissioner Jim Roth. It was caused by a lit candle left unattended on the mantle of a closed fireplace, Roth said. The candle melted down and the fire quickly spread throughout the living room before it "burned itself out" and smoldered, he said. Heat and smoke traveled into the hallway next to the living room and up the stairs, although the fire was contained to the living room, he said. The stairs lead to the front door - the only exit in the front unit - and Sosa and her daughter were stuck in their upstairs bedroom, Roth said. Hanover firefighter Jeff Spielman arrived at the scene first to find Sosa and her daughter leaning out of a second-floor window at the side of the house. Using a ladder, he rescued the 2-year-old first, then went back and brought Sosa to safety. Fire crews were able to control the smoldering remnants of the fire in a matter of minutes, Roth said. The fire caused about $50,000 in damage to the house, affecting the living room and causing some heat and smoke damage to the stairway.
