On Saturday, many of the Hanover and Penn Township firefighters had the distinct pleasure of attending and witnessing one of our brother firefighters Brian McDerrmit and past Penn Township EMS provider Casey Fahringer get married. It was a beautiful wedding and we wish this wonderful couple many many years of happiness.
Late this afternoon, Engine 49-1 assisted Pleasant Hill crews with a vehicle accident involving fire in the 1600 block of Baltimore Pike. Engine 49-1 arrived to find a minivan alongside the road, well involved. Engine 49-1’s crew, along with Pleasant Hill crews, extinguished the fire and overhauled the involved vehicle. Crews continue to make use of an acquired structure on Eisenhower Drive in Hanover Borough for training. This morning, C Shift crews spent some time refining their forcible entry skills on interior doors. Early this evening, crews were alerted via the Gamewell system of a fire alarm at a local multi-use fitness facility. Crews checked a rooftop HVAC unit due to the alarm being reported as a duct detector activation. No problem was located in the facility or on the rooftop unit and crews cleared a short time later.

Sutphen sales rep John Lawver stopped by Fire Station 49 this morning with a demonstrator aerial ladder for crews to look over. The Sutphen SLR 75 is Sutphen’s first venture into the straight ladder market. PTDFRS currently has an apparatus committee in-place to look at all of the current aerial options with the hope of replacing the current Truck 49 in the next few years. At this point in time, no manufacturer or type of aerial apparatus has been decided upon and the committee is evaluating all possibilities.

With the recent “Pokemon Go” craze sweeping the nation, numerous reports are coming in from across the country of distracted pedestrians and drivers playing the game. As a public service announcement, we urge motorists to be on the lookout for inattentive pedestrians and erratic drivers. The Pennsylvania State Police just issued a Community Awareness Bulletin pertaining to personal safety while playing the game. Happy hunting!
For the regularly scheduled shift training, C Shift toured the Lyric Band building on York Street in Hanover Borough. This building was originally the YMCA and was constructed in the early Twentieth Century. The type of construction found in this building is often called “Legacy Construction” by the fire service. Many interesting features were found in this building such as a wooden indoor track that used to exist above the main gym floor. Facility tours such as this allow crews to obtain vital information about a building in the event of fire or other emergency.
“C” Shift crews spent some time this morning reviewing patient packing techniques such as placing a patient on a long backboard, using the KED device, and setting up the LSP half backboard. Thanks to Medic Christensen and EMT Stork for assisting us with this shift training!

Late this morning, Fire Station 49 was visited by a mother duck and her eight ducklings. They safely traversed the parking lot enroute to the nest without falling into the storm drain. Captain 46A (Spickler) was retained on stand-by in the event a duck rescue was needed.

Late this morning, Truck 49 transferred to Adams County Fire Station 1 (Gettysburg) as Company 1 and surrounding units worked a house fire in Straban Township. Truck 49 handled no calls for service in the hour they stood-by.
