    With the forecast heavy snow and drifting, Local 2045 would like to remind homeowners and renters alike to keep accessible furnace, hot water heater, and dryer vents free and clear of snow. Obstructed vents create a potential safety issue with regard to carbon monoxide poisoning in an enclosed structure. As a safety reminder, DO NOT climb onto a roof to clear vents!

    2016012295192500[1]Winter storm preparations continue in the 2045 Local with staff installing chains on many of the department’s ambulances and select pieces of fire apparatus. Pictured is EMT Niner installing snow chains on Ambulance 49-3 which is located at the Clearview Station (FS 46-3). As the snow piles up, most frontline apparatus will be fitted with chains for traction. As a reminder, help us to help you and only travel if absolutely necessary during the blizzard conditions that are forecast for tonight and tomorrow.

    On Monday, January 18th,  Truck 49 stood-by at Adams County FS 1 (Gettysburg) while they operated at a working barn fire. Truck 49 covered the area for almost two hours with no incidents taken in. This marked the second time in almost as many days that Truck 49 found itself covering Adams County FS 1 and the surrounding area.

    20151210_082927[1]During this morning’s foggy commute, a vehicle accident occurred on Moulstown Road in the area of Youngs Road in Penn Township. Penn Township EMS units handled patient care while Engine 46-1 out of Hanover and Engine 49-2 from the Clearview Station handled fluid and traffic control. Car 49 (Brown) was in the area and added on to the call.

    A reminder goes out to the motoring public to reduce travel speeds, allow increased following distances, and to ensure the vehicle’s lights are illuminated when driving in foggy conditions.

    Elevator Rescue Operations Class Kicks Off In Hanover/Penn

    IMG_20151109_205031917[1]Last evening, the first class of a 16-hour Elevator Rescue Operations class kicked off at Wirt Park Fire Station. This class is split into two evenings as well as a Sunday and covers all facets of elevator rescue operations. While elevator rescues don’t occur everyday in Hanover and Penn Township, they do happen with some regularity. The instructor for this class is retired Harrisburg Bureau of Fire Battalion Chief and current Fort Indiantown Gap Assistant Fire Chief, Sam Clark. The class will make several field visits in Hanover Borough and Penn Township to look at and train on different elevator installations. In the picture above, crews review the drive system for a cable traction elevator at the Hotel McAllister in Hanover Borough.

    A steady Monday for 46/49 Fire and EMS crews found Engine 46-3 handling a medical emergency fly-out with Moul Field used as the landing zone. Since Sunday evening, Fire and EMS crews have been busy running a multitude of calls including vehicle accidents, fire alarms, medical assists and debris removal accidents.

    Quarterly Aerial Maintenance On Truck 49

    This morning, Truck 49 received one its quarterly maintenance sessions which was conducted by Penn Township “C” Shift (and Hanover FF Waltemyer). Services conducted by staff during this maintenance included: greasing frame lubrication points (suspension, driveline, etc.), aerial grease lubrication points (waterway, joints, etc.), and a full operational and visual inspection of the aerial. Routine maintenance like this extends the life of the vehicle, saves the department service dollars, and reveals potential problems.

Here, FF Kemmerly from the Hanover Fire Department dresses up a staff member in turnout gear and SCBA. The detail was broken into several portions: a lecture in the classroom, dress up for those who wished to do so, a tour of Truck 49, and lastly, extinguisher training for staff members.
