Our Christmas eve started with this vehicle accident with no injuries to the occupants and an elevator rescue to remove 1 stuck in the stalled car.

During this morning’s foggy commute, a vehicle accident occurred on Moulstown Road in the area of Youngs Road in Penn Township. Penn Township EMS units handled patient care while Engine 46-1 out of Hanover and Engine 49-2 from the Clearview Station handled fluid and traffic control. Car 49 (Brown) was in the area and added on to the call.
A reminder goes out to the motoring public to reduce travel speeds, allow increased following distances, and to ensure the vehicle’s lights are illuminated when driving in foggy conditions.
Just after 10:30 Sunday morning the Hanover and Penn Township Fire Departments responded for the second reported structure fire in just over a hour in the 500 block of Broadway in Hanover Borough. Both departments having been in a training at the “south park” station (Station 49) all arrived together with black smoke visible on side Alpha of a two story brick structure. Friday night at 2233hrs, engine 49-2 and Amb 49-3 were dispatched to Lee St in area of McKinley Ave, Hanover Borough box 46-06, for a vehicle into a structure with no injuries. Additional info was given as an truck into a house and reported to be stolen. Units arrived on scene with PD to stage while police surrounded vehicle to check for driver. No occupants were found and no injuries were reported by anyone in residence. Eng 49-2 remained on scene to provide lighting for PD. Minor damage to vehicle and house. Reported that truck was sitting outside at high street facility at maintenance running when it was stolen.
Santa? Nah, just the other legend, “J Shift” probationary firefighter Jay Lalley today during the annual Black Friday parade where the big guy, Santa Claus arrived back in Hanover via Truck 46.

Last evening, the first class of a 16-hour Elevator Rescue Operations class kicked off at Wirt Park Fire Station. This class is split into two evenings as well as a Sunday and covers all facets of elevator rescue operations. While elevator rescues don’t occur everyday in Hanover and Penn Township, they do happen with some regularity. The instructor for this class is retired Harrisburg Bureau of Fire Battalion Chief and current Fort Indiantown Gap Assistant Fire Chief, Sam Clark. The class will make several field visits in Hanover Borough and Penn Township to look at and train on different elevator installations. In the picture above, crews review the drive system for a cable traction elevator at the Hotel McAllister in Hanover Borough.
The first day of factory training on the new Truck 46 is in the books. C Shift trained with the factory representative from Sutphen on all aspects of the ladder truck such as: driver controls, fluids, maintenance, driving, pumping, and aerial operations. Aerial operations were conducted off of Wilson Avenue in Penn Township with all staff in attendance getting time on the pump and aerial controls. Truck 46 is a 2015 Sutphen SPH 100′ aerial with a 2000 GPM single stage pump and 300 gallon water tank. Truck 46 is tentatively expected to go into service in the spring of 2016 after extensive in-house training and equipment mounting. A and B Shift will receive factory training to round out the week.

A steady Monday for 46/49 Fire and EMS crews found Engine 46-3 handling a medical emergency fly-out with Moul Field used as the landing zone. Since Sunday evening, Fire and EMS crews have been busy running a multitude of calls including vehicle accidents, fire alarms, medical assists and debris removal accidents.
This morning, Truck 49 received one its quarterly maintenance sessions which was conducted by Penn Township “C” Shift (and Hanover FF Waltemyer). Services conducted by staff during this maintenance included: greasing frame lubrication points (suspension, driveline, etc.), aerial grease lubrication points (waterway, joints, etc.), and a full operational and visual inspection of the aerial. Routine maintenance like this extends the life of the vehicle, saves the department service dollars, and reveals potential problems.
