At approximately 22:30 hours on Monday evening, a local alarm was transmitted for a reported woods fire in the area of York Street and Deagen Road in Penn Township. Car 49 arrived several minutes after dispatch and requested an upgraded assignment due to a large fire involving hay and straw bales. Additional engine and brush companies were requested as well as a “Working Fire Assignment”. E49-1 arrived and dropped a supply line at the intersection of Deagen Road and York Street and it was secured by Engine 49-2. A positive water supply was established via a hydrant on the property of Hanover Brands on York Street. Initial knockdown of the fire was achieved by Engine 49-1 and Brush 49 utilizing fixed and portable streams. All told, an area approximately 75′ x 75′ x 15′ high was involved. Farmers, utilizing heavy equipment, ripped the piles apart and Truck 46 cooled the material as it was spread out. Crews remained on-scene for well over 12 hours to ensure the material posed no re-ignition threat. A big “thank you” goes out to the mutual-aid companies who assisted at this incident: Pleasant Hill Fire, Porters Fire, UHAL (Adams 33), SAVES (Adams 29), Hanover, and a number of fire police from area fire companies.
