It is that time of the year again when firefighters from Hanover and Penn Township Fire Departments will be out in the public and schools teaching fire prevention to our youth and residents. Plenty of fire prevention presentations are already on the calendar for the next two weeks. We strongly encourage all residents to have smoke detectors installed in every bedroom of their homes, as well as check and replace your batteries on a regular basis.
Staff Receives “Hero Badges”
This evening, employees from Chick-fil-A arrived at the Wirt Park station bearing “Hero Badges” from children that have recently eaten at the Hanover Chick-fil-A restaurant. The Hero Badges were colored, signed by the children, and attached to a delicious chocolate chip cookie from the restaurant. A big “Thank You” goes out to Chick-fil-A, Zephaniah, Campo, Leah, Alex, LeeAnn, Finnley, Leo, Paloma, Gabe, Leah, Ayden, Ada, Josian, Riley, and Nathan for thinking of us!

C Shift Training
This morning, HFD/PTFD “C Shift” met at Wirt Park Fire Station to conduct regular shift-level training. Today’s training consisted of salvage cover throws and a rarely used skill, constructing a “water chute” using pike poles and tarps. The purpose of this type of chute would be to channel water away from one place and redirect it to another. Such an instance might be found with a water leak coming through a ceiling. For this training evolution, water had to be channeled to a floor drain. HFD and PTFD fire staff conduct routine shift-level training to maintain proficiency in basic skills as well as learn new information and skills.
Feast Fit For A Fire House
Thursday evenings meal at the Wirt Park fire station was a feast to say the least. Little Everett’s BBQ catered a meal consisting of pulled chicken, ribs, baked beans, potato salad, and we can’t forget whoopee pies for dessert. New York Wire Cloth decided to provide dinner for the Hanover and Penn Township Fire Departments as a way of appreciation for all the fires we have responded to their facilities in 2015 as well as over the years. This was a very generous thing for them to do. The group of twenty including EMS personnel, firefighters, Deputy Chief Clousher and Assistant Chief Crouse in attendance are extremely grateful.
Annual Aerial And Ground Ladder Testing
On this late summer day at Fire Station 49, aerial and ground ladder testing and certification was conducted by a third-party firm on Truck 46, Truck 49, and all ground ladders. The purpose of this testing is to ensure that the aerials and ladders meet the prescribed safety and loading requirements. NFPA 1911 (a national consensus standard) recommends annual aerial ladder testing and certification. NFPA 1932 (another national consensus standard) recommends annual ground ladder testing and certification.
